FAST WOMEN!!!

Much ado about Danica....

Congrats to Danica Patrick for her accomplishments in Indy this past weekend. She has proven what I have tried to explain to so many potential marketing partnerships... Give us the opportunity, and we will outshine all else. Danica lived a dream this past weekend that so many others out there like her have yearned for... she proved that her talent paired with the support of a high caliber team can achieve what none others were capable of. She was not the first, Fischer and others had competed before her, but they did not have the benefit of ARGENT and late night talkshow host Letterman behind them. They needed someone who believed in them so that they were given the team it takes to win...

When was the last time a 4th place finisher was noted in the media, beyond the top ten results? Yet Danica graced newspaper covers and television highlights all weekend long. In fact, I do not even know the name of the man who won the race. His win was dwarfed by Danica's accomplishments, as the entire world sat rivvetted to their televisions watching her battle for the finish. Countless people (myself included) who never watch the IRL tuned in to see the girl with the talent take a stab at the top. And now Danica (and importantly... Argent... hint, hint) are household names that brought a whole new crowd back to the Indy Racing Leagues.

Women in motorsports are such a unique marketing avenue... they appeal to the masses, and are one of the best yields on investments imaginable. Argent could now not put a price on the benefits that their support of Danica has yielded them...

My hope is that companies will now take notice of this and offer their support to other women. Maybe one day a company will see the benefits in supporting my efforts, and realize that my dedication to marketing their company will reward their investments three fold.

Anyone out there care to support THIS fast female???

New Look

I got tired of looking at my generic cookie-cutter blog template, so I've spent the last couple of days trying to dissect a halfway cool skin source code to make it a little more Erica-feeling. I've discovered that its really not as complicated as I originally thought. Although somewhat tedious work, I manipulated colors, sizes, and options on this template to what you see now.

Let me know what you all think...

Oh, and have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend! I'm off to Orlando... be back Tuesday!

BLOGEBRITY

I've just discovered that I've been added to the list... I am now an official BLOGEBRITY. What is a BLOGEBRITY, you ask? Well, simply put, its a homage to pop culture, the 'celebrities' of the blogger world. I am somewhat miffed to discover that I'm only on their C-List...

Pfffttt.... I figured my weekly tribulations would at least merit a B-List nod.

::Sigh::

I guess its just a pleasure being nominated....

(Can I demand a recount????)

Red Light, Green Light

Some recent rants that I just had to get off my chest.

"TAKE THAT!"
Congratulations are in order for the City of Columbus' Municipal Transit Authority, who have succeeded in coordinating the lights downtown so that motorists will hit every freakin' red light in the 10 block span of the downtown district. Most cities time the lights downtown to change to green and avoid traffic pile ups... NOT Columbus.
Truth be told: somewhere there is a nerd laughing histerically, as he enacts his revenge for not being picked as the "traffic signal" in the "Red Light, Green Light" playground game while growing up.

"Corporate 500"
Speaking of whacky traffic regulations, who's smart idea was it for One Way streets? Their only function seemingly is to leave otherwise coherent individuals dizzy and disoriented from circling city blocks before arriving at their destination. By the time you locate what block will put you out at the correct one way street for your destination, you've completed enough laps to rival Earnhart Jr. And after you're good and dizzy, they expect you to PARALLEL PARK?!? Now you know why window offices are in such high demand; the 'skybox of the Corporate 500'.
YOU try leaving downtown at 5pm on a Friday if you don't think rubbing is racing... and you thought the weenie carts & happy hour downtown were on accident?!?

"Cattle Hurl-a-whirl"
Speaking of parking, the government takes the cake for the best scam yet:

>>>2 Hour Parking at the DMV<<<
I mean, seriously, who are they trying to kid? They might as well just add $15 dollars to every service offered and save the poor Meter Maid a whole lot of writing. Better yet, is the system in place once inside:

  • Stand in line to take number.
  • Number called: Approach desk to determine what service you need.
  • Sit back down.
  • Number called again: approach desk to get/give necessary paperwork.
  • Sit back down.
  • Number called again: Payment advice for your requested service.
  • Sit back down.
  • Number called again: Cashier does not accept credit/debit cards.
  • Go out to car for checkbook.
  • Miss number being called.
  • Wait for 45 more minutes for number to be called.
  • Try and approach information desk.
  • Attendant did not call your number and refuses to speak to you.
  • Get another number to ask if your number has been called.
  • New Number called: old number was called earlier. information discarded after no show.
  • REPEAT STEPS 2-9
  • Number called again: Cashier requires ID for personal check. (YOU ARE REPLACING A LOST D/L!)
  • RESIST URGE TO CHOKE CASHIER AND RETURN TO YOUR VEHICLE.
  • Find $15 parking ticket on windshield.
  • Proceed to pull out remaining hair.

This explains why driver's license pictures are always so terrible. Is that the best system the government can come up with?

(Nevermind, that was a dumb question.)

A New Relationship Develops...

An absolute tragedy occurred this weekend... my cell phone finally met its demise.

My cell phone is my life-line... my key to all I hold dear and even to those I'd rather hold... well, nevermind....
Its amazing how that little inanimate object can control such a large part of your life. We all carry it with us as an appendage of sorts, never leaving home without it! Most recent phones carry all of life's conveniences: speed dial, messengers, cameras, video, internet, email, entertainment, calculators, organizers, calendars... you name it, and its probably incorporated into a cell phone somewhere. With all the options that they have to offer, a cell phone can be just an unique as its owner. Listening to someone's downloaded ringtone (or for the creative few, their own composure), can say a lot about a person, as does their wallpaper, coordinated cover, or any of the other accessories made to compliment your personality.

So what happens when this vital part of our life is gone?!? Isolation... it feels as if you are alone in the world, and functionality ceases. How did we ever live without these? All of my contacts gone... my ringtone of choice vanished, and my link to the world temporarily haulted. Its a silent, lonely world... my closest friend is gone, and I'm mourning his loss.

So now, a new phone has entered my life. Much like a new relationship, I have to learn how to push his buttons, try and change him to meet my expectations, and painstakenly try and reestablish contact with the world in some fashion or another to rebuild the contacts I have lost. I think I like my new friend, Mr. Sony Ericsson,... he is equipt with the latest and greatest, wears the most fashionable of leather covers, isn't near as stubborn about dropping my calls all the time, and has much better endurance than my previous LG friend did. Sony even will recognize my voice, and if I ask him nicely, he'll do as I ask without me having to push any of his buttons. He's loud when you ask him to be, quiet when its necessary, and even silent when you just don't want to hear him! I'm even learning to adjust to his songs, recognizing his signs and expressions, and learning to navigate his complex buttons. And when all else fails, Sony even comes with a manual to help explain him...

Yes, in some ways, cell phones are the perfect friends. Its only when they leave you hangin' that it becomes a love/hate relationship. LG stood me up for the last time...

So, good riddance LG! You were a poor excuse for a friend anyways. You were far too controlling: you wouldn't let me talk to anyone, talked behind my back, and you were so lazy, you shut down all the time for a little charge. My new friend does things for me you never could do...

Be safe, go fast
...and if you haven't heard from me lately, please leave me a message after the tone.

BEEEEEP!

Under the weather...

I woke up this morning feeling as dreary as the skies outside my office in Columbus are today. This is the 3rd Friday in a row that I have been feeling under the weather... not a great way to begin the weekend. I'm not certain of the cause, but if past history holds true, my guess is that my stress-coping mechanism has decided it will stop me in my tracks one way or another.

In the past, I've had all kinds of ongoing stomach problems, which I later learned to contribute to the level of anxiety and unease in my life during those points. Call me a weakling, or a wuss, but during very depressing and conflicted times in my life, the rain clouds looming over my head seemed to do more damage than just emotional. It took me awhile to finally come to the conclusion that it wasn't worth my health anymore, I cut loose whatever teathered those clouds above my head, and watched as my health returned. I'm firmly a believer that there is no better drug or cure than happiness and peace....

Which is why my current condition is so perplexing. I'm actually quite happy in my life. I have a beautiful baby chihuahua, a wonderful group of friends, peaceful day-to-day living, and NO DRAMA. Yes, I worry and miss my family, but they are always with me, no matter how far from 'home' I may be. So why has my stomach now reverted to its crippling, persistently irritated state?

My only guess is that God has a way of telling us when we're in too deep... I guess with everything happening with my dad, my career, racing, and all of the daily side duties that keep me going non-stop all day, everyday, I'm long overdue for a day off. So tomorrow is Erica's Official Day of Nothingness. No cell phone, no internet, no housework, or web work, or ANYTHING.

Tomorrow, TRIXIE & I ARE TAKING A LOOOOOOONG NAP!

Back from WFC...

Another year on the sidelines for me, but with all that is going on with my father, the delay was inevitable. WFC is never a disappointment, as it remains the "Super Bowl" of Ford Drag Racing. I enjoy tagging along with the Gullett crew, as I am afforded the opportunity to learn and familiarize myself with a combination not unlike the one that I will soon be running. This race is also the place to reunite with many of the people that you typically do not get to see during the course of the year.

This year, I had the pleasure of finally meeting Nicolle Douglas of GirlsCanToo and some of the other members of the site. I've spoken to Nicolle via the web for several years, and her dedication to Girls Can Too has long been a supportive venture that I have always admired. Nicolle created the site and its mission in the late 90's and it has flourished as a motivating and influencial headquarters for women empowered in various motorsports and extreme sporting activities. The site is a positive place for women in all levels of involvment with sports and encourages participation without sacrificing any of our femininity... and without apology. Gone is the misconception that you have to be "one of the boys" to be involved in the sports that we love. Girls Can Too is a site that I believe in with all my heart because of the confidence and alligence it helps instill in many young ladies who are wanting to pursue their passion.

As far as the Thunderbird is concerned, I will be continuing on with its progress. Parker Chassis has been very busy lately (customers first!), and with all that was going on with my dad, I haulted my time on the car to go down to Orlando and spend it with him. Moody Racing just finished preparing Gullett's car for WFC, and is awaiting some last minute details on my powerplant from the Machine Shop to be accomplished before returning to its assembly. There isn't enough time in a day for all that is to do, but still I press on!!

Be Safe, Go FAST!

Erica

NOTE: Our prayers to the Floyd family, who experienced a tragedy leaving WFC when their rig engulfed in flames resulting in a complete loss.

Britt, Jen, Mr. Floyd & the rest of the Floyd Motorsports team: you are in our prayers. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

Born in Phenix City, Alabama, Trixie was adopted from the Feathers & Friends Pet Store in Columbus, GA in late June of 2004. Named after Speedracer's famed gal pal Trixie, this little pint sized spitfire has brightened many days for all who know her. So today, join in and celebrate Trixie's very special Happy Birthday!

Checking in...

I've been in Orlando since last Wednesday to be with my family and help my dad with appointments and anything else they needed. Unfortunately, the doctors did determine that there are four tumors in my dad's head, and they are metasticized lymphoma cells. He will begin an intensive radiation treatment on Monday that will last 22 days straight. They are hoping that will erradicate this last trace of the disease, and return my Papi his driving priveledges that he misses terribly.

This is the first time I've been back down since February, prior to his chemo starting. I was a bit worried, I hadn't seen him, and was apprehensive about what I would see upon my arrival. Its difficult to digest him being sick in the first place, and I was worried I'd find him more fragile condition than what was expressed to me on my phone calls. (Somehow, they love to still think they are protecting me by sugarcoating things at times...) But what a great treat to find that Papi is looking very strong and up in spirits, something that I am SO happy to report. Despite everything, he is up and moving around when he can, and is still my independent, smart, loving Papi.... much better from when he was weak and in pain during my trip this February. In fact, my overprotective mom is driving him crazy... (now he knows what its like on the OTHER side of that Ft. Knox-like fence they had me in when I was growing up, haha!)

More to come soon, too much driving and I'm exhausted!

Thanks for checking in on me!!! Keep Papi in your prayers!

Bumpy Roads

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by each experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along."

- Eleanor Roosevelt

Just when things start to look good, life throws out another curve ball.

My dad collapsed this past weekend, and was admitted into the hospital again for observation. Originally thought to have been contributed to his low blood cell count (an effect of the chemo on his immune system), an MRI showed 2 spots on his brain that doctors have not yet identified. Our hopes are that they are NOT metasticized cancer cells which have migrated to his brain, but preliminary test are inconclusive. While these findings are disappointing to hear, the optimism in the situation is that the spots are the size of a pen tip, and are treatable with more targeted chemo and direct radiation to his head. I have faith in my dad's strength and courage... and he will get through this with our continued prayers.

I am traveling to Florida to assist in any appointments or further developements, and will be out of touch for a short while. There is nothing as important in life as family... all else will wait.

Please keep my Papi in your prayers... it is with the prayers of all to date that he has come this far, and with the continued prayers of our friends will he pull through this as well.
